“Search (Making Art) / Getting Lost (In the Rules of the Market)”
During the Arts Week in Tucumán, the exhibition Search (Making Art) / Getting Lost (In the Rules of the Market), organized by the Maskay community and curated by Pablo Rivero, took place at the Casa Museo de la Ciudad in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina. This showcase blended physical and digital art, highlighting the transformative potential of Web3 for artists across diverse disciplines.
The exhibition featured a central installation consisting of a structural support with two screens displaying artworks and creative processes by 18 artists. It also included physical pieces such as drawings and paintings that, while digitized, demanded to be experienced in their original format to preserve the tactile connection with the viewer.
At the heart of the exhibit was a fundamental concept: “Artists support artists.” This space sought to break down geographic and technological barriers, fostering genuine decentralization and transparency. As expressed by Maskay, “making art is an act of search”—a creative catalyst inviting reflection and the reconstruction of concepts surrounding creation, recognition, and roles within both local and global art scenes.
Through this exhibition, fundamental questions about artistic identity were posed:
Why do we need to showcase ourselves? What does it mean to create art in the local scene and then transcend to the global stage? Will our achievements be celebrated or our efforts recognized?
In a context where “spaces are already occupied,” this exhibition proposed reimagining how we think about emerging art, challenging the logics of the market. Confronted by an authoritarian system that dictates aesthetic and consumption rules, Search (Making Art) / Getting Lost (In the Rules of the Market) encouraged artists to reflect on their place: Should they adapt or stand out? Camouflage or resist? Maskay emphasized the importance of community as a refuge, encouraging artists not to lose themselves in market dynamics—or at least not to do so alone.
The exhibition also engaged with the work of other local artists exploring digitality, alongside the permanent collection of the Casa Museo de la Ciudad, which includes texts, photographs, maps, and other materials reflecting the history and social context of San Miguel de Tucumán from its founding to the 1980s.
